The Clozapine (CLZ) Rapid Test Cassette (Urine) is a rapid chromatographic immunoassay for the
detection of N-Desmethylclozapine ( primary metabolite of Clozapine) in urine at a cut-off
concentration of 5,000 ng/mL.This test will detect other compounds, please refer to Analytical
Specificity table in this package insert.
This assay provides only a qualitative, preliminary, analytical test result. A more specific alternate
chemical method must be used in order to obtain a confirmed analytical result. Gas
chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) is the preferred confirmatory method. Clinical
consideration and professional judgment should be applied to any drug of abuse test result,
particularly when preliminary positive results are used..
Clozapine is an antipsychotic drug, structurally similar to olanzapine, that has been in use since 1989
for the treatment of severely ill schizophrenic patients who do not respond to standard antipsychotic
drug treatment. Clozapine is available as the free base in 25-100 mg tablets for oral administration.
Adverse reactions include hematologic, elevation of liver enzymes, seizures and tardive dyskinesia.
Clozapine is almost completely metabolized prior to excretion, undergoing N-demethylation, Noxidation,
oxidation of the chlorine-containing ring and thiomethyl conjugation. At least 80% of the
dose appears in the urine or feces as metabolites1,2n.
